Andrew Bird at Tremont Temple, 12.10.10
This was the third time that I had seen Andrew Bird perform live. The past two times had been at slightly larger venues (Berklee Performance Center and the Orpheum Theatre) and not nearly as “cozy.” We arrived a little after 6:30pm and waited until 8pm when the opener, Marissa Nadler, was scheduled to start. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show, as he didn’t recently release a new album, I couldn’t find any information about this show on the internet, and it was being held in a church. The hall itself was beautiful. There are certainly worse places to spend two and a half hours waiting for one of your favorite musicians to play.
I seem to be one of those people who become fixated on an artist’s back catalogue so I get really excited when I hear older songs. He played a slower/more conversational version of Why? which I was pretty sure I had seen him play before, but it is one of my favorites. Some other newer highlights included Nyatiti, I’m Goin’ Home (Charley Patton cover), and The Barn Tapes (a 10ish minute layering of instruments and sounds). You can tell that he’s passionate about what he does, and that he isn’t afraid to branch out - not only to try new things, but also to rework some of his older songs.
I’ve become less and less interested in his latest releases, but I still love watching him play. He really plays his instruments hard and has mastered the art of doing about a thousand things at once… plucking his violin strings, swinging his guitar around his back, banging his bow against the strings, plunking on a xylophone, all the while recording and mixing with his feet. The act of performing seems to be really cathartic for him.
